My Advice on Making a Cavalier a Part of Your Family
Cavaliers are "attachment dogs."  They can't get close enough to the people they love. They are seldom  a one person dog, loving the whole family equally.   If you have two, they also will love each other and sleep together.  They are naturally loving, trusting and devoted.  Your Cav. will want to be right with you at all times.  They are fun to take everywhere you go.  Mine likes to sleep in my lap when I'm driving.
Some people like to call them "little Cockers."  The truth is they are nothing like a Cocker.  I love Cockers but they are too hyper for me.  Cavs are very calm and quiet as adults.  Even a puppy will melt and hold perfectly still when you pick it up.  They only thing moving will be their tail that lets you know they are happy.
This breed is very versatile for any home really.  They love to sleep in your lap or quietly follow you around the house.   They are not rambunctious or barky.  They will bark a few times when someone is at the door, but will quiet right down.  They will also greet this new person with their sweet charm.  They like to play or do whatever you are doing but will quiet right down and go to sleep.
They are also so great for childern.   I say this because they are the most gentle breed.  Timid and trusting to a fault. They would never bite.  They are very soft mouthed.   It is important to teach children to be very gentle with them.  They are a toy breed and should be handled and played with gently.

Things I Want You to Know When
                        You Take Your Puppy Home
Bear with me, this may get lengthy but I feel it's important.           I want this to be a reference for new owners.
When you get your new puppy home,  he will need lots of rest.  Cavs mature more slowly than most breeds.  They are very much like a real baby.  They can play for short bursts of time and then need quiet time in thier crate.  They should be allowed to sleep more than they are played with.  They can get worn out easily if overplayed with and that isnt good for them.   Play shouldn't be rough.   They are a toy breed and can't handle rough play.  Children have to be taught to be gentle and careful.  I know, I have kids and they have lots of friends!
They should only play for 20 to 30 min and then have rest time.  Either in your arms or back in his crate.  As he gets older, his playtime will get longer.
I know that I have to limit playtime here.  The babies just cant take a lot of it.  The constant handling.  They get tired and run down and may get cranky.  Just like a real baby.  They need alone quiet time to rest.  I know its hard with  a new baby but it is important.  All babies need rest to be healthy and happy.
Puppies also have a need to bite and chew.  They will mouth everything just to help them learn.  They have very sharp teeth.  To teach them not to bite and chew on your fingers or hands, gently tap them on the muzzle and say "no bite, (name), no bite".   They have no way of knowing that it hurts you.
First and foremost Cavs are dogs and not little people.  They are pack animals.   Dogs when moved into a new environment, need to establish a pack leader.  They are dependent on us to be that pack leader and set boundaries.   The sooner they learn that you have rules they must follow, the better companion they will be.  They have a need to please the leader.   Cavaliers love to be talked to and love praise and attention.   Show and tell them where and what you want, your baby will quickly learn what to do to get your praise.   Because of their easy going and sensitive nature, you should only need to use a firm "No" for disipline.
FEEDING:   I feed the adults and puppies Science Diet.   The adults are fed once a day and given one or two treats a day.  Their treats are pig ear strips and a healthy dog bones.  I also give them greenies to chew on and real pig or cow bones.
The puppies get all the dry food they want after they are weaned at 6 wks.  After about 12 wks you can go to one cup in the morining and one in the evening.   After 6 months you can cut this down to 1/2 or 3/4 cup twice a day.  Just go by your puppy,  if they seem very hungry he may still need more food.
The Cav puppy will not get their adult coat until about 10 months.  They want to stay puppies as long as possible.  I have a 9 1/2 yr old male, Trig, who still acts like a puppy.
I will try to answer any more questions you might have for me, just ask!

Hernias are a fact of life when you are breeding     purebred cavaliers.  My vet said if you dont have hernia in one or two puppies in every litter, then you aren't breeding purebred Cavaliers!  I can have them fixed here at my vet.  If the puppy is going to be spayed/neutered, sometimes we wait and have it repaired during that surgery.
